S. Thyagarajan, FIIA, AICP - Director of Regional and Urban Planning
Mr. Thyagarajan has served as Energy Answers’ senior planner specializing in regional resource recovery systems planning, design development, engineering and project implementation since 1996. His primary responsibility is to provide the urban and regional planning framework and analysis essential to establish a regional resource recovery program. Mr. Thyagarajan’s responsibilities also include the design of site development standards and criteria sensitive to community planning and design considerations, evaluation of the impact of a project on visual aspects of the site and its environmental context.
Prior to joining Energy Answers, Mr. Thyagarajan directed a bureau staff and reported directly to the Deputy for Administration of the NYS Division for Youth as the Director of Facilities Planning and Development. His responsibilities included development of capital system and program plans for the Division's residential facility system for adjudicated juveniles; preparation and implementation of capital programs; development of the short and long term capital budgets.
Mr. Thyagarajan, in his career in regional planning from 1963 to 1982, was responsible for the development of regional plans for the Baltimore, Detroit, the Albany Capital District, and the Tri-State New York City region in the US and the regional plan for the Belgrade Region in current-day Serbia; he served as the chief transportation planner for the London region from 1970-72; and provided consultancy services for the United Nations Development Program in the planning for the southwest region of South Korea in 1974.
Since 1983, Mr. Thyagarajan has been an Adjunct Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Albany, in the Department of Geography and Planning.
Active as a volunteer in Albany NY, Mr. Thyagarajan has been a board member in various local organizations involved in health and human services as well as the Mayor's Committees on retailing, downtown and urban design issues. He also has served as a member of the Albany Civic Forum, Riverfront Action, the Albany Land Use Advisory Committee of the State Commission on the Capital Region; and Chair of the strategic planning committee for the Ten Broeck Mansion.
Mr. Thyagarajan holds a Master of City & Regional Planning, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH; a B.A. in Architecture from the University of Bombay, India; he is a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects - FIIA; member of the American Institute of Certified Planners - AICP; Mr. Thyagarajan has received awards such as the Merit Citation - City of Belgrade, for successful completion of consultancy for the Regional Plan; the Director's Award for Outstanding Achievement, NYS Division for Youth; and the Director's Certificate of Appreciation for achievement and performance beyond the call of duty, NYS Division for Youth.
