Joseph W. McCarthy - Senior Project Engineer

Joe McCarthyMr. McCarthy has over thirty years of managerial and engineering experience with waste-to-energy, power, water and wastewater treatment, hazardous waste treatment, ground water remediation, and chemical manufacturing facilities, all of which provides the knowledge base necessary for developing new business opportunities.

Prior to his current assignment as a Senior Project Engineer in Energy Answers’ business development program, Mr. McCarthy served as the Vice-President and Regional Manager for Energy Answers’ resource recovery facility operations in western Massachusetts from 2002 through 2006. Mr. McCarthy also was facility manager for the 240-tpd Pittsfield (MA) Resource Recovery Facility from 1998 to 2002.

Prior to 2002, as a manager with the engineering firm of Metcalf & Eddy, he coordinated business development activities, proposal preparation and contract negotiations for the contract operations, and the operations and maintenance support services for power, waste-to-energy, water and wastewater treatment, hazardous waste, biomedical waste, and groundwater remediation facilities. He completed numerous projects including a 25-year contract to operate the landfill and waste-to-energy facility in Jackson County, MI. He has trained power plant personnel throughout the country in the operations and maintenance of mandated continuous emissions monitoring systems.

Mr. McCarthy has certifications as: 1st Class Engineer - MA; 1st Class Chief Stationary Engineer - NY; Chief (Resource Recovery) Facility Operator - American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Water Treatment Plant Operator - Grade IV, MA; Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator - Grade VI, MA; Title V (septic) System Inspector - MA; 40 - Hour OSHA Health and Safety Training First Aid & CPR.

Mr. McCarthy’s affiliations include: Member, American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Member, New England Water Environment Association; Member, Society of American Military Engineers.

Mr. McCarthy holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University and has completed course work in Combustion Control & Technology and Water & Wastewater Treatment.
