Patrick F. Mahoney, Former President and CEO
Founder, President, CEO and Chairman of Energy Answers International, passed away in California on June 13, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Pat was a driving force in the U.S. based solid waste management industry, pioneering an innovative zero disposal approach that focused on the recovery of energy and recyclable materials from waste. His vision and energy will be deeply missed.
Energy Answers was formed in 1981 by Pat, Gordon Sutin and the Green family of New York City to implement his resource recovery approach and to utilize patented technologies developed by his engineering firm, Smith & Mahoney, P.C. Under Pat's direction, Energy Answers designed, built, operated and expanded the SEMASS Resource Recovery Project to recover energy and recyclable materials from waste - probably the most successful facility of its kind ever constructed.
Pat also developed and patented dry and wet combustion ash management systems for the recovery of valuable materials and production of building materials; acquired and upgraded two small, marginally operating waste-to-energy facilities and brought performance and operations to award-winning levels; developed a process utilizing waste sludges in solid fuel combustion systems to reduce air emissions; and advanced the concept of industrial ecology, utilizing waste resource recovery facilities as a primary generator of economic value and major reducer of environmental damage.
Another of Pats passions was historic preservation; Pat was a leader
in the efforts to preserve historic buildings in downtown Albany, NY that
were slated for demolition under urban renewal programs.
The purchase, renovation and commercial reutilization of many downtown landmarks
are attributed to his entrepreneurial efforts.
Pat was honored to share his wealth of knowledge and has been a keynote speaker at conferences and university forums and a guest lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Harvard; Yale; University of Puerto Rico; Colorado School of Mines; Syracuse College of Environmental Science; and the University of the Virgin Islands.
He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He graduated in 1965 with a degree in Civil Engineering and joined the firm of Smith Engineering in Albany, NY. He soon partnered with Benjamin Smith to form Smith and Mahoney, PC and in 1981, Energy Answers was formed.
