SEMASS Powerlines

Sustainable Energy Independence

Municipal Solid Waste, as a fuel source, is a renewable, clean alternative to fossil fuels. One ton of MSW can replace 1.5 barrels of oil, or 750 pounds of coal, for energy production (Metric equivalent = 1 Mton MSW, 270 liters oil, 375 kg coal). In the US, that equals almost 20 trillion barrels of oil that could be replaced for energy production, if we combusted all our trash instead of sending it to landfills. Rising fuel costs coupled with greenhouse gas produced at landfills makes combustion of waste with recovery of energy and recyclable materials a logical solution.

Solid Waste Management

Utilizing modern resource recovery technology substantially reduces the amount (90% weight reduction), toxicity and volume (95% volume reduction) of the waste going to landfills. Additional benefits include the recovery of recyclable metals and production of ash, which can be used in construction materials for road bases and concrete blocks.

Sludge Management

Sludge from wastewater treatment facilities, paper mills and other industrial processes, as well as fats, oils and grease (FOG), can often be co-combusted with MSW in a resource recovery facility. Co-combustion provides a sanitary and safe alternative to traditional disposal with the added benefit of reducing NOx in the boilers.

Greenhouse Gas Management

Technologies which can replace major sources of greenhouse gas, such as landfills and traditional fossil fuel power plants, are already eligible for carbon reduction credits in some countries.

Cans for Recycling

The environmental benefits of recycling increase when larger quantities of materials are recovered and when distance to market is minimized. Often the quantities of recyclable materials available with a resource recovery facility are sufficient to serve as raw materials for nearby manufacturing industries. Recycling can be the catalyst for new industries, more jobs and a cleaner environment. Each ton of waste processed at a resource recovery facility using Energy Answers’ Processed Refuse Fuel technology yields 92 pounds (41 kilograms) of recyclable metal and 162 pounds (73 kilograms) of construction aggregate.

Green Waste Management

Composting can turn green waste into valuable landscaping and erosion control products. Use of green waste as a feedstock for ethanol production is also environmentally friendly. Ethanol production provides 100% diversion of biodegradable waste from landfills, a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to refining an equivalent amount of gas/petrol), and also provides 35% to 50% reductions in greenhouse gases and particulate compared to gas/petrol.

Ash Management and Reuse

With the goal of utilizing 100% of the waste stream, Energy Answers is a leader in effective ash management with recovery. New resource recovery facilities are designed to ensure that a high quality ash is produced which can be utilized in manufacturing and construction applications. Older systems can be retrofitted to increase recovery and reuse potential.

Brownfields - Eco-Industrial Development

Sustainable reuse of abandoned properties should always be considered as a first option in developing future industrial sites. Expansion or redevelopment of these sites is often complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Energy Answers is able to bring a team of scientific, legal and insurance specialists who can assess the liabilities and develop a plan for bringing the Brownfield site back as a vital component of a region’s economy.

Management of "Special Wastes"

Tires, confidential documents, household hazardous waste, “white goods” and other non-traditional wastes require special handling to protect the environment. Energy Answers designs programs for these materials as part of an overall integrated solid waste management plan.

Collection and Transfer

Transfer facilities, as well as good collection services, are integral components in solid waste management programs and promote effective recycling, composting and waste reduction efforts. Our transfer stations allow communities to consolidate curbside collected waste into larger transfer trailers or rail cars, thereby reducing the cost to transport the waste to its final destination. Energy Answers has worked with numerous communities to develop and operate collection and transfer facilities that enable them to more efficiently and effectively manage their waste.

Landfill Closure and Reuse

Energy Answers has the experienced staff to close landfills and potentially recover methane gas in compliance with all regulations. Our staff also displays great sensitivity to the final use plan. Energy Answers has partnered in the past with Case Golf Company to design and build golf courses on closed landfills.
